Introduction
Use this guide to replace the fuel filter in a 2007 - 2010 R56 Mini Cooper S.
Steps

2. Removal
-
Grab your 3/8 inch ratch, extention and 10mm socket and remove the bolts that secure the fuel filter housing cover.
-
The panel might be stiff and stuck to the chassis slightly, hammer the flathead screwdriver below the panel, pry up and lift off.
If it's dirty, hoover up a little and wipe down the fuel filter housing lid to prevent contamination when we open it up.
-
Optional but recommended, pad outside of the fuel filter lid with paper towel to absorb any spillages.
-
Next, gently remove the connector by pinching and pulling the green tabs. Use the flathead if struggling.
-
Next, mark the metal fastener with a paint pen so you know how tight is has to be on reinstallation.
-
Now, grab your hammer and flathead and loosen the metal fastener by hitting it anti clockwise.
Once loose enough, you should be able to remove by hand
-
With the metal fastener removed, paint mark the fuel filter lid so you know how it lines up to the housing when replacing.
-
Next, stick your flathead in the hole below the connector slot and pry the whole fuel filter housing up.
Please be paient, like most parts on this car, it's plastic 🙃.
-
Careful with this step, when I managed to remove the lid a bit of fuel spilled as shown in the second image below.
Keeping the flathead in that hole, grab the base of the housing and pry the lid open anticlockwise.
-
Remove the fuel filter with a little twist and a pull.
-
Place the lid to the side.
As shown in the image below, The lid's seal fell off, discard this as we'll be replacing it with a new one.
-
Empty the fuel back into the fuel tank.
-
Mop up any dirt in the base of the housing.
3. Installation
-
Grab your new filter and seals.
-
You might find it easier to jam the filter housing with a flathead to make installation easier.
-
Replace the inner filter housing and lid seals, they're the two smallest ones.
-
Replace the exterior lid seal, the medium size one.
-
Finally, loosely fit the secondary exterior lid seal, the largest one and place it to the side.
Ensure to fit it the correct way, with the flat edge facing up.
-
Next, grab your filter and push it into the housing until it clicks.
-
Grab the lid, slot it into place and tighten it.
-
Remove the flathead and lower the housing about 80% of the way.
Drop down the main seal, blue one, and push it in until the top flat edge is flush.
Essentially, the bottom lip of the blue seal should hook under the black rim.
-
Once the seal is properly seated, line up the lid with the paint mark and push it home. You'll known immediately if the seal is properlly installed, the lid should stay put and not pop out.
🏁 Conclusion
Reassembly is the reverse of removal starting at step 7 and working your way backwards.
Also, prior to starting the car, turn the ignition on and off 4 times to prime the fuel and the new filter.
